St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery: A Legacy Preserved
Established in 1846, St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Whitby is not only the oldest in the region but also a sanctuary of peace and history. Over the centuries, it has become the final resting place for many of the area’s pioneering souls. The cemetery is known for its serene pathways lined with old Maples and Pines, offering a tranquil environment for reflection and remembrance. The headstones, each telling a unique story of the local heritage. These inscriptions are available to view in the reference section of the main branch of the Whitby Public Library.

Our cemetery is administered and overseen by a cemetery board of trustees consisting of current members of St John’s Anglican Church, Whitby. The board is responsible to the church Wardens and our priest. Cemeteries in Ontario are governed by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.
St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery exists primarily for its members. Rights may be purchased by persons complying with all of the following:
- Attending our church regularly
- Envelope subscribers
- On the newsletter mailing list.
All arrangements for purchase must be made through the Cemetery Manager, or a Cemetery Board Trustee elected by the congregation at the Annual Vestry Meeting.
