Summer Employment Opportunity – Groundskeeping (cemetery assistant)
St. John’s Anglican Church is a historic landmark in the Port of Whitby, with a cemetery dating back to the mid-1800s. This remains an active cemetery.
There are major revitalization plans for the cemetery, centering around several landscaping endeavors aimed at managing the land sustainably, and obtaining certification as a wildlife habitat.
With the kind participation of the Canada summer Jobs program, the church is offering two (2) positions for summer season grounds keeping. Each position will be for eight (8) weeks, 35 hours per week, at a wage of $17.60 hourly.
The tasks and responsibilities of this position will include:
- Planting and maintenance of flower beds and planters within the cemetery.
- Regular landscaping chores such as seeding, mulching, pruning, weeding, watering, and more.
- Aid in the planning of new features for the cemetery such as benches, landscaping, and other land improvement projects.
- Participate in public tours of the cemetery.
- Learn about the history of the cemetery.
- Assist in the refreshing of various tombstones and other grave markers.
- Assist in various pre and post-ceremony activities such as grave marking and general cleanup.
- Maintenance and cleanliness of the landscaping shed.
- Any related cemetery duties as requested by the cemetery manager.
- Participate in strategic planning meetings
- Participate and assist in special events like ‘Beautification Day’, ‘Cleanup Day’, Historitcal tours, and other events
To be eligible for this position, candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications:
- Between the age of 15 and 30 years at the start of the employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment (NOTE: International students are not eligible); and,
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented with strong written, verbal & organizational skills
- Excellent health and ability to walk and carry heavy loads.
- Ability to work independently and with others
- Openness to learning
- Familiarity with and interest in landscaping

This will primarily be an on-site position with some in-office responsibilities. You will be led by the St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery Manager, Trustees of the Cemetery Board, and churchwardens. This will primarily be an on-site position with some out-site responsibilities ie: research at the Whitby Archives. You will be led by the St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery Manager, Trustees of the Cemetery Board, and churchwardens.
